Vanillaware Company Profile

VanillawareCompany Name: Vanillaware, formerly Puraguru (from 2002 to 2004)

Date Founded: February 8th, 2002

Founder: George Kamitani and two other former members of Atlus

Headquarters: Chūō-ku, Osaka, Japan

Brief History: Since its name change in 2004, Vanillaware dedicated itself to presenting games with a distinctive artistic appeal, which is more than apparent in its first work, Odin Sphere. As of January 2010, the team consists of 23 people who are, as Kamitani described, “Basically 100% artists.” The two Playstation 2 games, Odin Sphere and GrimGrimoire, set an excellent standard for fantasy RPGs; both received praise from critics for the higher quality of their characters and story. The pattern continued onto the Nintendo Wii with Murumasa: The Demon Blade, an exploration-oriented 2D slash-em-up with lush environments and a system of progression revolving around collecting blades.

Their most recent release, Dragon’s Crown, will be the first game in their distinct style to include console multiplayer, which fits nicely into the arcade-style side-scrolling beat-em-up genre. Having already sold upwards of 300,000 copies, it’s clear that Vanillaware is able and willing to provide its fans and followers with quality games.
